A new way of life...

Sloot Journal
2124 hrs

So I was talking to the sloots the other night, and I told them of a question my mom had posed to me on the phone the other day. She asked if I was really happy in London.

The truth is: yes and no. I mean, yes, oddly enough I am kinda homesick for the first time. It's weird having all your flatmates going home or having their parents come up, knowing that you can't do the same. And it's hard living in South East Londond - the ghetto - where people try to rob the local grocery store at gunpoint, or where your tube station smells like Holmdel Park (interpt as you wish...), or where you witness a drive by hit and run (of a car smashing into a parked car - NOT a person) walking home from the Freshers Ball or where you DON'T HAVE INTERNET IN YOUR ROOM. I guess I'm also not accustomed to all my friends getting wasted every night and waking up at 2 PM because you banged on their doors with your flatmate from Beirut because they were supposed to go shopping with you ...

But at the same time, I think of all the things I did this week.

Monday I bummed around (not something I can do while at Muhlenberg).

Tuesday I went to Greenwich Pier with my best friends and hoped on a boat on the Thames that went around London - and then got legit fish and chips at 12:30 AM.

Wednesday I had two classes and at night I saw our acting teacher's self written and self directed play at Covent Gardens (titled HOMESTEAD - which is amazing). On

Thursday President Helm came up and we went to the Tower of London - took a tour, had dinner at the Youman Warders Club, saw the Key Ceremony, and then drank with 7 of my friends and 4 British soldiers...

Friday I was late to class because I woke up at 10:04 and the class started at 10 (DAMN you alarm clocks!) - but Tidmarsh didn't care. He honestly didn't give a shit. Tidmarsh IS SHakespeare, let's be real. After class, I literally hoped on the Tube and went to Waterloo and just walked around. I went to the National theatre (aka their BOOK SHOP) and bought £30 worth of scripts - mainly for class...I FINALLY saw Big Ben in person and the London Eye. Later, the RoHos (Royal Holloway kids) came up, and we went to Leischter Square to go clubbing - that was a disaster.

Saturday we went to the Globe, took a tour, went to the Exhibit, and then were front row center groundlings for IN EXTREMIS - amazing. We were there when they were doing publicity shots...maybe we'll be on the Globe website next season! Then, we went home and got ready for the Freshers Ball. I took many pictures for the 007 themed party. It was also casino themed. Alice and I played Black Jack for about an hour and then I just kinda sat at the side and chilled with Muhlenberg people. I left early because I still wasn't feeling well.

Today I woke up early, had a turkey sandwhich, and then Tagz and I banged on people's doors to bring them to the land of the living (it was 2 PM) - then we all went to Sainsburys. I called my mom to talk to her about making Pop Pop's macaroni for the flat (it was John's and my turn to cook). I read the rest of the HIS DARK MATERIALS script (LOVE), and then went to the kitchen to cook. It was amazing - there were all eight of the flatmates there (and we also had Jade's twin eating with us). We spoke about getting the internet and washing dishes (aka keeping the kitchen clean), and then everyone else did dishes because John and I had cooked. John *made* the salad, garlic bread, and bought cheesecake. I made Pop-Pop's macaroni and cheese (yeah three generations using the recipe). It was so nice to have a nice, alcohol feel meal with my flatmates. Hahaha.

And now, here I am with Mary (who's from Kansas) and Tagz (who's from Beirut) in the school library, talking to people online, checking MySPace, and checking Facebook - the others went to buy alcohol...Life is crazy, but I'm going to miss it in a few months. I'm gonna miss being with these wonderful people and going to see all these wonderful, historic places. As much as this place can be really intimidating and scary - because for the first time, I really AM in the real world - it's really starting to grow on me and I'm really starting to appreciate being here in London. I'm really starting to love it.
